Accessible Toilet

Local community sports club, Gledhow Sports & Social Club, will be celebrating after being awarded £9,890 in National Lottery funding to help provide an Accessible Toilet. The club is based on Gledhow Lane in Leeds (LS8 1NQ), and has used the money to create a new dedicated space where both an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities have been installed.

The main celebrations will take place on Friday 8th September with an opening event, details can be found on social media. Gledhow Sports and Social Club is a non-profit making, community-owned establishment that is run by a committee consisting of 7 members (including 3 trustees) who work on a voluntary basis to encourage wider-use of the clubhouse and outdoor sports facilities.

They have one full time employee who runs the clubhouse supported by a number of part time bar staff. The club provides an inclusive community facility that is home to junior & adult football teams; junior cricket teams, Leeds Sikh Cricket Club and Chapel Allerton Runners. Membership has been expanded by focusing on the needs of families having created a safe place for children to socialise – both outside and indoors. They also run family events including quizzes; discos; bingo; summer BBQs and comedy nights. The funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community under in the UK, will help further increase the inclusivity of the Gledhow Sports & Social Club. They have a number of members with disabilities and a growing number of members with babies and small children. Having access to the new accessible toilet facilities and baby changing facilities will transform the experience of members, removing any barriers to visiting the club, and hopefully encourage new members to join.

The National Lottery Community Fund recently launched its new strategy, ‘It starts with community’, which will underpin its efforts to distribute at least £4 billion of National Lottery funding by 2030.  As parbt of this, the funder has four key missions, which are to support communities to come together, be environmentally sustainable, help children and young people thrive and enable people to live healthier lives.

National Lottery players raise over £30 million a week for good causes across the UK. Thanks to them, last year The National Lottery Community Fund was able to distribute over half a billion pounds (£588.2 billion) of life-changing funding to communities.
